Miami Beach by scooter: a one-day route with 7 stops

The easiest way to see Miami Beach in a day is on a 50cc scooter from Miami Beach Scooter at 1745 Bay Road: pick it up at 10am, ride a South Beach loop of about 7 miles (16 if you add North Beach), park at each stop, walk Ocean Drive and the car-free streets, and have it back by 7pm. The full route works best Tuesday to Saturday, because the shop is closed on Sunday and the Botanical Garden is closed on Monday.

Miami Beach Scooter has been in Miami Beach since 1998. This is the loop we'd ride with one day and a 50cc. Each stop lists its road distance from the shop, where to leave the scooter and one tip.

Before you leave the shop

The most common mistake we see from first-time riders is holding the throttle while grabbing the brake. Let go of the gas first, then brake.

Ride on the street only. City rules ban scooters from sidewalks and allow no more than two scooters side by side in a lane. Florida law requires eye protection, so bring sunglasses. Lock the scooter with the chain we give you every time you park, and use the spaces signed for scooters and motorcycles.

Our rental terms keep a 50cc off highways, causeways and interstates. This whole route stays on city streets.

1. Miami Beach Botanical Garden and the Holocaust Memorial (0.7 miles)

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden at 2000 Convention Center Drive is free and open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm. The Holocaust Memorial at 1933-1945 Meridian Avenue is also free. You'll find both 0.7 miles from the shop.

Parking: leave the scooter in a signed scooter and motorcycle space and walk between the two.

Tip: the garden is closed on Mondays. On a Monday, check the memorial's posted hours before you go, or ride straight on to Lincoln Road.

2. Lincoln Road (1.0 mile)

Lincoln Road is a pedestrian mall that runs from Alton Road to Washington Avenue, 1 mile from Miami Beach Scooter. You can't ride on it.

Parking: a signed scooter and motorcycle space on a nearby street.

Tip: leave the scooter there for the next stop too. Española Way is about a five-minute walk south.

3. Española Way (1.1 miles)

Española Way is a pedestrian street about a five-minute walk south of Lincoln Road. It's had a $2.5 million renovation.

Parking: none on Española Way itself, since it's closed to traffic.

Tip: walk here from Lincoln Road instead of moving the scooter. You skip a second parking hunt.

4. Ocean Drive and the Art Deco Welcome Center (1.7 miles)

The Art Deco Welcome Center at 1001 Ocean Drive, next to Lummus Park, is run by the Miami Design Preservation League. The official Art Deco walking tour starts here.

Parking: a signed scooter and motorcycle space on a street west of Ocean Drive. Then walk Ocean Drive.

Tip: don't plan to ride Ocean Drive itself. Parts of it between 5th and 15th Streets have been closed to cars on and off since 2020, it shuts for events, and our rental terms ask you to stay off it. The Beachwalk is walking only too: the city bans all motorized vehicles on it.

5. South Pointe Park (2.2 miles)

South Pointe Park at 1 Washington Avenue is the southern tip of Miami Beach: 17 acres with a pier and views of the downtown Miami skyline and Fisher Island. Entry is free.

Parking: a signed scooter and motorcycle space near the park, then walk in.

Tip: the next leg, 2.3 miles north to The Bass, is the longest ride in South Beach. Check the fuel gauge here.

6. Collins Park and The Bass (1.1 miles)

The Bass is a contemporary art museum in a 1930s Art Deco building in Collins Park, at 2100 Collins Avenue. It's 2.3 miles from South Pointe Park and 1.1 miles from the shop.

Parking: a signed space on the streets around the park.

Tip: Collins Park is on the city's list of places where all motorized vehicles are banned, along with the Beachwalk and city sidewalks. Park on the street and walk in.

7. North Beach Bandshell (5.5 miles)

The North Beach Bandshell at 7275 Collins Avenue is a Miami Modern (MiMo) bandshell, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 2022. The Rhythm Foundation has run it since 2015.

Parking: the free city lot at 73rd Street and Collins Avenue.

Tip: this is the longest leg, 4.6 miles up Collins Avenue from The Bass and 5.6 miles back to the shop. Our free service and pickup area ends at 63rd Street, so check the fuel gauge before you head north and leave by 6pm to be back before 7.

Questions riders ask

Do I need a license to rent a scooter in Miami Beach?

For a 50cc scooter you need a valid car driver's license, from the US or another country. Anything over 50cc, like the Vespa 150, needs a motorcycle endorsement.

How old do I have to be?

18 for a 50cc scooter, 21 for a Vespa 150 or 300.

How does the deposit work?

We place a $300 hold on your card at pickup and release it when you bring the scooter back. It isn't a charge.

Can two people ride one scooter?

Not on a 50cc rental: it's one rider per scooter, so couples rent two. A Vespa 150 is approved for a passenger if the rider holds a motorcycle endorsement.

Can you ride a scooter on Ocean Drive?

Not on a Miami Beach Scooter rental: our rental terms ask riders to stay off Ocean Drive. Parts of Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th Streets have been closed to cars on and off since 2020, and it closes for events. Park a block or two west and walk it.

Can you ride a scooter on the Miami Beach Beachwalk?

No. The City of Miami Beach bans all motorized transport on the Beachwalk, on city sidewalks and in Collins Park.

Is a scooter a good way to get around Miami Beach without a car?

For a day in South Beach, yes. Every South Beach stop on this route is 0.7 to 2.2 miles from Miami Beach Scooter at 1745 Bay Road. A 50cc rents from $85 a day, and you park in signed scooter and motorcycle spaces and walk the car-free streets.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. Someone at the counter always speaks Spanish.

What are your hours?

Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm. We're closed on Sunday, and every scooter is due back by 7pm.
